Alabama bills to strengthen religious vaccine exemptions stalled again in 2026
Bills to strengthen the religious vaccine exemption for K-12 students and add one for public college students have been filed each session since 2025 without passing. Other bills would require private and church schools to accept religious exemptions, bar state agencies from advertising vaccines, open school activities to homeschooled military families, and let midwives perform newborn screening tests.
No upcoming Alabama events listed yet. We add rallies, public hearings, board meetings and other ways to show up as we find them. Know of one? Tell us.
Homeschool access for military families
The HOME Act requires active military families to provide notice and follow state homeschool law, and requires local school systems to give certain nonenrolled students equal access to JROTC, facilities, special education services, and interscholastic activities.
Homeschooled children should have fair access to the school programs their families help pay for.
Strengthen religious vaccine exemptions
Further provides for the religious vaccine exemption for K-12 students and creates one for students at public colleges and universities.
Families should be able to decline vaccines that conflict with their faith, in school and in college.
Let midwives perform newborn screening
Authorizes midwives to administer certain newborn screening tests.
Families who choose home birth should be able to get standard newborn care from their midwife.
Make private schools honor religious exemptions
Requires private schools and church schools to accept religious exemptions to vaccine requirements and provides penalties.
A valid religious exemption should be respected at every school a child attends.
Stop state agencies from advertising vaccines
Prohibits state entities and county health departments from advertising vaccines, with exceptions, and requires the Attorney General to investigate violations.
Public health agencies should inform, not market, so families can make their own vaccine decisions.
